Hands down the best: Million Lights
It's such a masterpiece of sound from start-to-finish. Million Lights is the most cohesive record they ever made, and musically, it's the most imaginitive, and well-composed. The samples blend seamlessly into the songs, and the vocals and instruments are mixed perfectly. There is a great variety of material, too: Instrumentals, fast songs, slow songs..it suggests that the band's creativity was firing on all cylinders. I believe that the Joh'burg and Shift Away singles were the preludes to the songwriting on this album. The First Songs and Chapter IV are certainly classics, but those albums are a band still finding their way musically, and have more filler. I believe that Million Lights was T21 finally establishing their identity, and assembling a solid collection of songs that could not compare to anything else they've done. It deserves 100 times the attention that it ever got. Anyone who appreciates electronic, ambient, or industrial music will love this album. It's their 'Dark Side Of The Moon', in my opinion.

Million Lights is brilliant... I think each and every T21 album stands alone as something special. WORKS has an 80's industrial/metallic (not metal music) feel with a dark pop sensibility. HAPPY MYSTERY CHILD is the 2000 version of WORKS. SIDE BY SIDE is glorious! GOHOHAKO is what PLAYS THE PICTURES should have been... the New age soundscapes make it an extremely romantic album... perfect for love making evenings. DISTANT VOICES is an amazing collection of sleek tracks too. I cannot pick just one....

I would agree with your comment about HMC as a modern day Works. When I first heard the new album, I thought the same thing. I think it's the 'poppiness' of the songs that are reminiscent of Works' songs. At the time, Works was definitely more straightforward and accessible than their previous releases, and was quite an obvious change from Million Lights. If any of the atmosphere carried over to Works from Million Lights, it was evident in the song "Betrayed". Otherwise, Works was a whole new beast. I guess the similarity lies in that T21 changed pace once again after Distant Voices and Gohohako.
Is it true they are already working on a new album?

Each one serves a unique purpose. As far as things being "carried over" from Million Lights to Works, "Betrayed" does show this, but "The War Outside" and "Westwind" display the Million Lights atmosphere a little more (in my opinion). On "Works", I LOVE the song "Speak By The Cards". It is so different, so wild, so strange, yet filled with passion and power. "Harbours And Stations" is another amazing track... ".. .another victory for love and devotion..." I prefer the live version of "Westwind" on "Raw Material" because it has the female reading of Percy Bysshe Shelley's poem "Ode To The Westwind". On Works, "The Messenger" is extremely similar to "A New Outset".... but "A New Outset" is one of my alltime favorite T21 tracks.. Instead of the "Another Move (remix)", I think they should have used the original version on "Side By Side".
